The zoo has always specialised in smaller animals in the past, providing "natural" living spaces for many creatures no longer seen in the city zoo. The careful planting of shrubs and trees as they have matured, will keep you wondering what is next, providing a very relaxing and natural atmosphere! Today new exhibits exist for larger animals such as cheetah, blackbuck, maned wolves, sitatunga and of course the forthcoming "Exmoor beast"!
Exmoor zoo is different from other zoos. It is not a wildlife park or a city zoo, but a more personal, friendly and contact orientated zoo which has grown into a North Devon Valley. This is reflected by the talks and encounter sessions ( every half hour in the Summer), a visit will show you there is a lot more here than first meets the eye!
About Exmoor Zoo
Exmoor zoo only exists for the animals. The development of the zoo over time and the commitment of staff and volunteers has meant the zoo has progressed from a small farm holding of 2 Devon fields in 1982 to one of North Devon`s major attractions and an integral part of the local community.
Conservation
As a member of BIAZA ( British and Irish Association of ZOOs and Aquariums), Exmoor zoo actively co-operates in national and international breeding programmes for many of the worlds rarest birds and animals. The zoo is particularly successful with its cranes and primates. Many bred at the zoo find homes with zoos and wildlife parks all over. During most months of the year there are always new families to be seen with their parents in the zoo`s aviaries, enclosures and paddocks.
Activities
We consider that a lot of fun in visiting us is your ability to join in the activities that are going on inside the zoo. Exmoor zoo has things happening every day, such as our daily events, face painting and zoo trails.
You can organise special activities such as birthday parties and keeper for a day. Also, as special extras the zoo organises event days.
Events
As well as its usual educational talks the zoo also runs several event days throughout the year these focus on a variety of environmental, conservation and animal topics.
These events are free to paying visitors to the zoo and provide something extra to get involved with during your visit. The event days also have a serious side and help the zoo to fund raise for the various wildlife and conservation charities it supports.
